Our History

Since 1963, Retech has been a global leader in the supply of metallurgical processing equipment for demanding industries in ever-changing markets.

Retech has been a pioneer in the application of Electron Beam Cold Hearth Melting, Plasma Cold Hearth Melting, and Cold Wall Induction.  Retech also developed the Rototrode®  (non-consumable arc) and Plasma Arc Centrifugal Treatment (PACT™) technologies.  Each custom engineered system produces products with the unique metallurgical and geometric properties that are required by the application.

1963

In 1963 Retech was founded in Marin County, California by Max Schlienger and began development on its first Vacuum Arc Remelt (VAR) system.

1973

By 1973, Retech had developed the first Cold Wall Induction (CWI) melting system for Titanium.  That same year, Retech acquired the first license for plasma torch development.

1974

The first of Retech’s plasma arc welders was developed for production of VAR electrodes made from loose material that had been compacted together.

1976

By 1976 Retech needed to move to a facility to allow the company to grow, so the company relocated to Ukiah, California where it has maintained an office ever since.

1980

The first production scale Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) system was delivered to a Retech customer.

1982

1982 brought about the first production scale Electron Beam (EB) system to be delivered.

1985

This was the year Retech established a dedicated Research and Development Department as well as installing the first of the R&D plasma systems.

1988

Outside interest led to the development and delivery of the first Plasma Arc Centrifugal Treatment (PACT) system for vitrification of specific waste streams.

2011

In 2011 Retech became a part of the SECO/Warwick group of companies.  As a subsidiary of SECO, Retech expanded its global presence through added sales and service centers around the world, benefiting its customers with enhanced proximity.

2012

The second dedicated R&D plasma system was installed and development of the innovative Gamma-PAM furnace configuration began.

2014

Redech installed 2 new R&D systems in 2014. An Electron Beam (EB) system will explore material and application innovations for a wide range of materials, and a new Plasma Atomizer (PAM-2) will explore the use of plasma for atomization and spheroidization.

2020

The larger production plant in Buffalo, New York was opened and the process of moving our entire Research and Development facility from California to New York began.

2023

Retech, a global leader in the supply of metallurgical processing equipment since 1963, celebrated its 60th anniversary.

2023

A second Buffalo facility was secured for a total of 113,000 total square feet of R&D, manufacturing, assembly, and storage to stay ahead of anticipated growth.

2023

Retech established cooperation with GeniCore, a specialist in composite materials engineering, to expand Retech’s powder metal processes with spark plasma sintering.

2024

Retech acquired Remelt Scientific to add material handling and waste reprocessing solutions for ultra-pure remelt of recycled tailings, scrap, and revert.

Ultimately manufacturing was Matt’s true calling and so he moved on to United Silicone, a company under the Illinois Tool Works umbrella. As the Equipment Operations Manager, Matthew was in charge of all engineering and production of custom and standard machinery as well as oversite to facilities management and all capital projects. In his free time Matt likes to spend it with his family, two rescue dogs, and many hobbies, including woodworking, bicycling, ice hockey, 3D printing, reading, and learning to code in Python.
