Plasma Cold Hearth Melting Furnace

Retech provides state-of-the-art Plasma Arc Melting (PAM) systems with cold hearth refining configurations for alloy production.

PAM Cold Hearth Melting systems are designed for alloy production and scrap recycling. These systems will utilize various sized hearths and number of torches to provide the melting and refining required based on the raw materials. The material is typically cast into ingots that feed secondary processes such as Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) or forging.

Plasma Arc Melting systems use an electrically excited gas, typically helium or argon, to melt the materials in a sealed chamber, under inert atmosphere. The PAM process allows for low evaporative losses, thereby creating higher tolerance alloys. As the world’s foremost producer of Plasma Arc Melting systems, our equipment is designed:

  • to provide proven refining technology to eliminate high-density inclusions (HDI) and low-density inclusions (LDI)
  • with different torch configurations based on melting energy and refining requirements.
  • to handle each customer’s material composition and form.
  • to create material in the forms required for secondary processing.

Plasma Cold Hearth Melting is the versatile option for processing the widest range of reactive and refractory metals.  Each system is custom engineered with the optimal hearth design, torch configuration, and total torch power for the customer needs.

The systems offer significant cost savings compared to traditional alloy production methods by eliminating the need for constructing electrodes from sponge compacts by welding and primary Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) production steps.

Cold Hearth Plasma melting allows for versatile material inputs, including:

  • scrap
  • drops
  • runners
  • sponge compacts
  • master alloys
  • to produce high quality ingots.
